A customer who implemented a SAP system "out of the box" without some additional features which cannot be found in standard system, say printout forms of the customer's specific look and feel. To accomplish these additional features you need a development. SAP has its own development platform based on ABAP programming language with versioning system, debugging capabilities and software distribution mechanism. The development platform resides on SAP application server. Since version 6.10 application server renamed to WebAS (Web Application Server) as it is now equipped with Web server capabilities including Java instance in flavor of Java EE.
